Suspect arrested – Deputy Solano is on life support
By Terry Miller
A suspect in the attempted murder of an off duty Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department (LASD) deputy was arrested Tuesday after a brutal attack at an Alhambra Jack in the Box fast food establishment.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva hosted a press conference Tuesday to provide updates on the senseless shooting of off-duty Deputy Joseph Gilbert Solano in Alhambra on Tuesday, June 10, 2019 at approximately 5:45 p.m.
Deputy Solano, 50 years-old, is in grave condition in the hospital. He joined the Sheriff’s Department in 1999, where he spent approximately a year, before moving on to other employment. In 2006, he was rehired and is currently assigned to Access to Care Bureau.
Solano, who was in civilian clothes at the time of the attack, was waiting for his food when he was shot once in the back of the head, police said.
According to a press release sent out by LASD, “Joseph loves spending time with his family. As a big USC football fan, he has frequently attended games during their season. He is a kind-hearted, generous person who is always willing to help others before himself.”
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide investigators arrested attempted murder suspect Rhett McKenzie Nelson for the shooting of Deputy Solano after investigators learned of his whereabouts in Long Beach.
Nelson is a male white, 30 year-old from Saint George, Utah, who was initially detained by Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) on Tuesday, June 11, 2019.
Based on information received by LBPD, from a family member of the suspect, LBPD officers located the vehicle pictured in LASD’s Wanted Bulletin. They detained the driver of the vehicle, believed to be the suspect involved in the shooting on June 10.
Sheriff’s homicide investigators responded to the scene to take over the investigation. At 1 p.m. Tuesday, the suspect was arrested by LASD homicide investigators and transported to a local station where he was interviewed.
Based on the suspect and vehicle information released during the Deputy Solano shooting investigation, Los Angeles Police Department detectives believed Nelson was potentially responsible for a murder on 7th Street in Los Angeles. They worked throughout the night with Sheriff’s homicide investigators to help identify and locate the suspect.
